Empowering Children: Raising Awareness on Rheumatic Diseases

Empowering Children: Raising Awareness on Rheumatic Diseases

Rheumatological diseases, often associated with adults, can significantly impact children, affecting their joints, muscles, skin, and even internal organs. Despite its prevalence, there’s a severe lack of awareness regarding these conditions in India. While Western countries have studies indicating a prevalence ranging from 1/1000 to 4/1000 children, in India, epidemiological data is scarce. Nonetheless, estimations suggest that approximately 1.3 million children suffer from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and 200,000 from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) alone.  So, raising awareness about these conditions is crucial to ensure early diagnosis and treatment.

Insights from Ankura Hospital Rheumatic Disease Awareness Day

Children with rheumatic diseases require specialized care, tailored to their unique needs. However, in India, diagnoses often come too late, leading to irreversible damage. This delayed diagnosis results in worse outcomes, impacting growth and causing permanent joint or organ damage. So, addressing this issue is crucial because it affects the overall well-being of children.

To combat this issue, World Young Rheumatic Diseases Day was celebrated at Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, Banjara Hills branch on Sunday, March 17th, 2024. The event aimed to raise awareness among parents, doctors, and primary practitioners about childhood rheumatic diseases.

Children with rheumatic disorders were given hope and resilience by the Chief Guest, Ms. Malavath Purna, a world-renowned mountaineer and the youngest female to summit Mount Everest.

Dr. Anjani Gummadi, a Pediatric Rheumatologist and Immunologist at Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, highlighted the significance of early diagnosis and prompt treatment in enabling children to lead near-normal lives. Early detection of rheumatic diseases is essential to promptly provide treatment and mitigate the risk of long-term complications, including childhood disability.

Fun activities and painting competitions engaged the kids and parents, fostering moments of joy and relief. So, alongside the enjoyment, attendees also gained valuable insights into rheumatic diseases in children. Dr. K.K. Durga Prasad, Medical Director and Senior Pediatrician at Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, expressed satisfaction in connecting with families, children, and doctors.
