Severe Morning Sickness: Symptoms & Causes

Morning sickness is when you have vomiting/nausea while being pregnant. Morning sickness needn’t necessarily happen to you in the morning; it can happen at any part of the day or night. This is commonly experienced by  pregnant women, particularly in the first trimester. But there are times when women can have it throughout pregnancy.

It can be controlled with the help of a few home remedies, like having a snack every once in a while or consuming over-the-counter medicines. Morning sickness rarely results in severe symptoms that could cause a loss of weight and dehydration.

Symptoms of Morning Sickness

Some of the symptoms might include nausea and vomiting – and the triggers are most likely odors, humidity and spicy food. It is common in women in the first trimester and starts 9 weeks after conception. Once you’re in the second trimester, the symptoms start to disappear slowly.

Causes of Morning Sickness

There is no particular cause as such, but hormonal changes are likely to play a role in morning sickness. Nausea and vomiting that may persist is rare, and might be another medical condition altogether. In this case, it is important to seek help from your doctor.

Symptoms of Severe Morning Sickness

Severe morning sickness is also referred to as hyperemesis gravidarum. Some of the symptoms include:

  • Vomiting multiple times a day
  • Severe dehydration
  • Dizziness
  • Loss in weight
  • Insufficient urine production

If you’re experiencing severe morning sickness, it is important to consult your doctor, who might even suggest getting admitted only to receive IV fluids – this will address your hydration.

Ways to Manage Morning Sickness

  • Eat biscuits/small portions as often as possible
  • Get ample rest
  • Eat foods that are not spicy
  • Drink lots of water/juices
  • Spend time in fresh air outdoors
  • Ensure the rooms are ventilated

Should You be Worried?

It’s important to look for care if you feel the need for it. Severe vomiting cannot be considered normal for pregnant women and it definitely needs medical attention. Other possible conditions that can cause severe morning sickness include acidity, inflammation of any of the digestive organs and thyroid disease.
